a Kind Glutton and Helpful Links

It’s hardly imaginable to find a positive aspect to gluttony, yet didn’t someone (who again?) say that every bad Middah can be channeled for a good cause?
I’ll admit it, I eat way too much way too frequently.
I’m lucky that the usual punishment accompanying gluttony has not yet fallen on me, yet I know I have to work towards lowering my nosh and general food intake.

Last Friday my wife had spent the whole day cooking various delicious looking and tasting (yes I did) foods, yet the guests contented themselves with tiny portions.
While they certainly showed their appreciation with words and sounds they neglected to eat most of the food.
When so much effort is put into something one can’t be blame the hostess feeling a little disappointed when the enthusiasm is lacking.
Luckily my gluttonous nature kicked in and I finished everything to the last morsel (well not to the last, but enough…), with my genuine enthusiasm quite visible followed the disappearance of her look of disappointment.

Many great blogs are discussing what can be done as support to Israel, I’m surprised no one suggested increasing acts of Chessed.
Prayer, collective Tehillim, financial support are most helpful tools and should certainly become part of our daily routine, but I say; visit your lonely neighbor, take your children along to an old age home, go to nearby hospitals and inquire if they have any Jewish patients who could use a good Kosher meal or a comforting smile. Invite the new couple on the block for a Shabbes meal, offer to baby-sit for an overstressed mother, see if you can help your neighbor/friends/cousin find the Chavrusah he’s been looking for. Go on J-blogs and comment….

HELP YOUR FELLOW YIDDEN CONCRETELY, I believe that it’s a greater (or at least equal) Mitzvah than donating money.

For great lists of things we can and should do for Israel and its Jewish inhabitants I urge you all to visit the following blogs.

good post..
much more useful than spending your day reading up to the minute news...
(which we all do.. unfortunately)

Great post, Prag- you're so right!

ANONYM-good addition, watching the news every five minutes is not very producive.Doing concrete things and dedication the Mitvahs and the Learning to Israel is a better way of helping.

RR-thanks, how're you holding on there?

Good for you to give such pragmatic proactive advice!!!!
(Clapping and mexican wave)

Excellent advice. Wish we would all take it on. Nice post.

I agree, increasing our Chesed is deffinately a great suggestion.

Great post

All good ideas to help Israel.

Personally, I am still planning on leaving in 3 weeks with my husband to go and support the homeland. This may not be exactly a vacation, but it will be a worthwhile experience. If the children of those Israelis, who are the same age as mine can go into the army and defend the homeland, we certainly can go for a 2 week visit.

By the way, all family and friends think we have lost our minds. Being in the minority has always helped here.

Well written. Any mitzvah we can do (bein adam l'makom or bein adam l'chavaro) can help in these dark days. The trick is to keep it up when Hashem brings us true Shalom.

agree agree agree

Kasamba-thanks for the clapping.

Socialworker-no one is expected to do all pf these things, pick one that you feel you’re able to do.
A big chessed can be accomplished in a short time span

LVNSM-thanks, sorry I skipped you in last post, a simple oversight.

Barbara-that’s quite brave, I myself am hesitant about going.
I understand that your friends worry about you, but I guess that there’s no greater way of showing your support.

Sarah-thanks

Neil Harris- did you mean ‘until’?

The Sabra- only on three counts? :)

Very true.

And of course we can daven...

exsem- no we must daven

wow, i see nobosy mentioned your part of the post on food. So i will comment. ok then, yes! most people love to eat. therefore we all have to enjoy food in moderation. god did create food for us to enjoy, right? all pleassures in life we have to enjoy in small portions and we will appreciate all the glory. Now to mention about the host(your wife) making all that food and noone eat it, oh well, you do get people that have small appetites. then you get thoses guest who have BIG appetites. there are all kinds. the point is your wife did a huge chesed and let all guest enjoy as they wish. thanks for an eye opening post! I will try to take on a little something myself.

Chaverah)thanks for noticing the first part, most jumped right to the second part.
I guess you can force food down people’s throat, even if it is delicious.

I agree. I should have commented on the food since I love food. I try to elevate myself through the passion of eating. Doubt I have elevated myself but I continue to enjoy eating:).

Next time they don't eat, send over the leftovers

Thank you Prag
that was a much needed post - and greatly appreciated

prag --you certainly lived up to your name with that post -not only did you provide essential advice, but you also gave a great, actual example of chesed -utilizing your "special middah" to make your wife happy. Awesome:)

Prag, that's okay

I agree....
If we all better ourselves...things will fall into place..

Social-you can only try, and who said we can’t have a little Olam Hazeh?

Nemo-I’ll keep that in mind.

TOWIK-you’re welcome.

Okee-It’s always pleasant to find someone who read through the whole post and got the point.
Thanks

Lvnsm- thanks

David-It really ought to.

ok everybody, stop saying 'good idea' and DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT! :o)

Seriously, your post is very true, but we all really have to take it to heart and do something NOW, rather than... oh, I need a few days to think of what kinda chesed i want to do, or can do....

Not that anyone here would do that....:) (push it off, i mean)

workingema-I like your pragmatic approach, but it's not possible for everyone, working people for e.g. may have to wait for the week end in order to do some concrete chessed, Tehillim, Prayer and Tzedakkah on the other hand should become part of our daily routines.

Thanks for visiting and commenting.

Or pray that Hezbolla is taken out of lebenon because they're hurting both Israel and Lebenon.

prag, hehe

Tehillim, prayer and tzedakah is actually pretty concrete for me...if I can get to either of them at all... sigh.. the life of a working mom:)

Gluttons are indeed underrated.

My husband and I are leaving for Israel in 3 weeks. We want to show our support, and will be bringing goods, and I plan to donate blood as well while we are there.

This is our first trip to the Holyland. Although this may not be the best time, it feels like the right time for us to go.

May this crisis come to a resolution quickly.

Shop-Tell Karl to read this :)
I’m glad you noticed that part of this post.

Suzan-Pray their kind is taken away from this world.

The sabra-So you’ve got a healthy appetite too?

Workigema-well it’s not about the quantity; it’s about the effort you make to get to it.
A working Ima has a lot on her plate

Barbara-You have more idealism than I have, I planned to go but now I have second thoughts
